[...] During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries a current of thought was formed by the work of various scholars, including: Francesco Milizia, Quatremère de Quincy and first of all Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who arrives at the affirmation of stylistic restoration. The same Viollet-le-Duc writes: "To restore a building is not to maintain it, to redo it or to repair it, it is to restore it in a complete state that may never have existed in a historical moment" (item Restauration, Dictionnaire raisonnè de l'architecture francaise, 1854/1868).
This definition sums up the axiom that underlies the stylistic restoration, for which the ruins must "regain dignity" and "return to the ancient splendor" in such a way as to restore, together with ancient forms, the ancient systems of values [ ...].

Bergamo is one of the most important provinces of Lombardy, a size that is not to be considered solely geographic and economic, but also, and above all, of a cultural nature. This importance is underlined by the presence on the territory of Bergamo of numerous university faculties. However, the dialectic between city and university, which from an ideal point of view is narrow, in reality is not evident.
Bergamo, in fact, unlike other Lombard provinces universities, such as Pavia or Lecco, does not have a defined university center to be identifiably within the urban fabric [...].

To remember Enrico Mantero, a lecturer at the foundation of our Faculty, who suggested, with others, the name of Faculty of Civil Architecture, we have established the award for the best degree of each academic year, which we present here
at its first edition. This occasion leads us to reflect critically on the work done, which is largely contained and represented in the final experience of each student in his graduation project. The tendency of our School is to put the project at the center of the training, which is always an architectural project even when it is a planning, conservation, interior or structural project. The architectural project is the educational objective to be achieved in the years of study, both of the three-year degree and of the specialist degree [...]

POLITECNICO DI MILANO, PREMIO MANTERO 2002 - Catalogo della Mostra E. Mantero, Politecnico di Milano, Milano, Dicembre 2002.
In 2002 the Faculty of Civil Architecture of the Milan Polytechnic established a prize for the best thesis of each academic year named Enrico Mantero.
Mantero, a pupil of Ernesto Nathan Rogers, has been professor of Architectural Composition since the 1960s, at the Polytechnic, then, until 2001, the year of his death, at the Faculty of Civil Architecture school where he has believed since first foundation projects and which subsequently helped to build.
The aim of the award is to induce a critical reflection and a debate on the work that takes place within the School, work, which in the thesis project, has its moment of conclusive verification [...].

The project involves the transformation of the Convent of San Francesco into the new center of the orobic culture. From the compositional and technological point of view we have differentiated the new from the antique through the use of materials not related to tradition and shapes that contrast with the geometric regularity of the convent type. The project can be summarized by the three elements that contribute to the composition of the whole: the system of the courts, the exhibition routes and the tower. The historical building becomes at the same time container and content thanks to the realization of a glass cover that, wrapping the Cloister of the Arche, reconsiders the existing space from which you access the "gallery" of street arts and the multipurpose hall, where the ancient church was placed [...].
